Julie and my Grandad was the ambulance driver for the miners welfare after he himself had worked underground as a miner. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The money for the house\/ambulance station the ambulance and Grandads wage coming from donations from the miners through the miners\u00a0welfare. There was a miners welfare committee room behind the ambulance garage seen on the left of one of the photos.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Grandad lost his job and therefore the tied house after the nationalising of the pits and the start of the NHS. The family then bought the shop in Medomsley from his step father Mr. Anderson before later selling it to Freddie Chester who had previously worked in Medomsley store\/coop<\/p>\n\n\n\n
