Memories of the Big and Little Woods Tyne Avenue, Pont Lane and Bradley Cottages by Neville Waite

Firstly about his railway memories I was born in watling bungalows 70 years ago so I was lucky enough to have played around the old station and ridden quite a lot of times on the train to get to Newcastle then on to Whitley Bay. Great times they were.

Back in my day there was two woods, one was known as the little wood and the other was the big wood. The big wood pretty much started at the bottom of Tyne avenue and ended nearly at Bradley Cottages.

This was early 60’s. The little wood was on the other side of what we called the big wood. It was nearer Bradley Cottages there was a bit of a dip in the main road heading towards Bradley.

Back then I played mostly in the little wood but the big wood had a sort of canyon and a large oak tree with the usual rope attached, to swing on that one was terrifying.

We got to the Little Wood via the old prefab houses that were demolished after the war.

Failing that we could also go into old farmer Bagnells field, he didn’t mind at all.

Sorry I don’t have any photoes, back in those days we didn’t have anything posh like a camera.

They were hard but good times.

Happy days playing down at Sammy Mans bridge. Its great its still there and being used
