School Holiday Memories

Latest contribution from the Leadgate Resident

As summer has changed now to autumn I’m remembering days gone by when the school summer 6 weeks holidays came along, not a care in the world.

Me and the lads going down stoney lane to the old tip looking for old pram wheels to make a boogie or afew old push bikes to make a ‘good one’.

Nothing beat a day down the little wood building a camp or playing on the rope swing.

Some days were just spent on the Eden playing field kicking a ball around or  a game of Mounty kitty or British bulldog.

Many a time we would set off walking down to the ‘divy’ spend hours swimming or plodging in the river, then that uphill walk all the way back to Leadgate,no mobiles them days,as long as we were back before it was dark or the street lights came on.

Once the summer hols were over we’d look forward to blackberry week hols, do a bit blackberry picking, pinch a turnip from the farmers field too make a lantern for Halloween,I wonder how bits of cutlery were bent hollowing them out. Then it was time to start making your ‘guy’ for bonfire night,it was always exciting collecting wood etc for your ‘bonny’ ,piling it up and hoping your rivals from around the squares wouldn’t torch it before bonfire night.

Once the bonfire had burnt down we’d throw potatoes in the embers give it 5mins then start eating them, black on the outside but as hard as owt on the inside.

Next was Christmas holidays, when we’d go carol singing, not that we could sing but as kids we were excited that it was Christmas .

Yes I know I’ve missed tattie picking or hay baling out but thought other people could add Thier memories of school holidays.

What are your memories?
