The Masons Arms Pub Memories

Thanks to our regular contributor The Leadgate Resident

I’m sitting here thinking of yesteryear,I’m in the Masons Arms on a Friday night,Jimmy and Thora are mine hosts with Jip the dog , it’s just turned six oclock (opening time ,them days)

I’ve got myself a pint of trophy,it’s a Whitbread house and in walks Ceil Best and Malcolm the local butchers quickly followed by little Tommy Steele and Norman.Norman was the local grass cutter for the council and also maintained the local bowling club green along with a guy called Raymond.

Shortly afterwards the ‘lads’ come in, I’ll abbreviate there names but I’m sure Leadgate folk or the locals of the pub will work out who they are, the 3 brothers,Tom?Kevin and Eric, Gary F ,Ian  G, Joe and Chris R, GED H and sometimes his brother Tony, the big fella Stephen R(rip) also his Dad Fletch,Dex, Stephen C,Stewy B,George R, and many other lads.

In the lounge end sometimes you’ve find Tony W and his wife Mary( I’m sure they looked after the pub when Jim& Thora were on holiday)Tommy M and his wife Pat, Harry C and sometimes his wife, she was a teacher at English Martyrs School also spotted on occasion was Andy Plant and his wife, there’s really too many to mention but I’m sure people will fill other names in I’ve missed.

Happy days…please add your comments of other names and memories of a once great local pub.

  1. Many a good Saturday afternoon session in there. My buddy lives just round the corner at Villa Real, we’d often go in there on a sat for a few, then go back to his for a while in my attempt to head back into consett 🙂
